«Aber ich bin alt geworden, die Jahre sind vergangen und ich bin nie wieder dorthin zurückgegangen.» So klingt es, wenn Sonia Andresanos Grossmutter von früher erzählt. Sonia Andresano, eine italienische Fotografin und Performance-Künstlerin, zeigt im Rahmen vom Projekt «Das Feministische Kapital» ihr Werk «quattrocentocinquantanovevirgolaquattro» in den Schaffhauser Kunstkästen.
In den letzten Jahren hat sich Andresano viel mit ihrer Grossmutter unterhalten. In den zehn Kunstkästen zeigt sie nun Auszüge aus einem Gespräch mit ihrer Grossmutter, einer 95-jährige Dame aus dem süditalienischen Salerno. Wer entlang der Kunstkästen spaziert, gewinnt einige intime Einblicke in das bewegte Leben dieser Dame.

Eine emotionale Reise

Andresano spricht mit ihrer Grossmutter über eine 459,4 Kilometer lange Pilgerreise (daher der Name «quattrocentocinquantanovevirgolaquattro» der Ausstellung), welche die Grossmutter in den 1990er Jahren von Salerno nach Ancona unternommen hat. Es ist eine emotionale Reise: Die Erzählungen der Dame sind bisweilen surreal, da und dort gespickt mit aggressiven, aber auch sehr zerbrechlichen und witzigen Tönen. Mal schwärmt sie vom grossartigen Essen, an das sie sich immer noch gut erinnert. Dann spricht sie wieder über ihre Eheprobleme und die Erwartungen, die man damals an Frauen hatte. Es ist berührend zu sehen, wie sich die Grossmutter mutig der Enkelin öffnet und ihr ihre intimsten Nuancen von Unschuld bis zur Boshaftigkeit offenbart. Im Laufe der Ausstellung wird klar: Diese Reise war für die Grossmutter auch eine Katharsis.

Die Reise ist Zeugnis einer Epoche, eines inneren Kampfes und einer Widerstandshandlung, die sich in all den kleinen Dingen des Alltags manifestiert, die vielen Frauen widerfahren. Was als eine persönliche Erinnerung gelesen werden kann, wird auf einmal kollektiv: In dieser Geschichte können sich Enkelinnen, Töchter und Grossmütter wiederfinden.

Sonia Andresano's project quattrocentocinquantanovevirgolaquattro (459.4) presents itself to the city of Schaffhausen for the first time, bringing the experience of personal memory and linguistic expression into public space. Within the ten kunstkästen set up in the city, the words of a 95-year-old woman from Salerno, who confesses to her granddaughter the paths, choices and conflicting feelings of a lifetime, are presented in written form. Her words are extracted from an account that lucidly returns the memory of a pilgrimage that took place in Italy, from Salerno to Ancona, in an imaginative experience covering 459.4 km. "A surreal voyage, at times grotesque, whose journey is seasoned with harsh, aggressive, fragile and amusing tones; a voyage that 'muddies the waters', of cleansing, catharsis and contrasting blasphemy in which my grandmother finds the courage to reveal her most intimate nuances of innocence, naivety, malice, wickedness and bad faith," says artist Sonia Andresano, the woman's granddaughter. 

The work quattrocentocinquantanovevirgolaquattro (459.4) can be read as a fragmented journey through a personal memory that becomes collective - in which granddaughters, daughters and grandmothers can mirror themselves - becoming a testimony of an époque, of an inner struggle and an action of resistance that manifests itself in the small things of everyday life common to many women. 

 

On the occasion of the opening, the performance Ritenta, sarai più fortunata (Try again, you will be luckier) will also take place at Kunsthalle Vebikus.

Performance im Vebikus

Im Anschluss an den Rundgang zeigt Andresano zusammen mit einer Athletin eine Performance in der Vebikus Kunsthalle. «Ritenta, sarai più fortunata» (Versuch es noch einmal, dann hast du mehr Glück) zeigt eine Frau, wie sie unaufhörlich nach dem Gleichgewicht sucht. Die Aktion überträgt ein Gefühl aus dem menschlichen Dasein, insbesondere dem weiblichen, in eine Bewegung.

Die Performance wird von der Tonaufnahme zu «quattrocentocinquantanovevirgolaquattro begleitet».

The performance Ritenta, sarai più fortunata (Try again, you will be luckier) takes place with the involvement of a local athlete who embodies the female figure. Her body is engaged in a simple and continuous action in search of a balance that is almost impossible to achieve through the vertical position. A quest that becomes a metaphor for the condition of all human beings and that is addressed here in particular to that of women. A game that stubbornly continues: the artist tries, falls and tries again in a potentially infinite rituality. Ritenta, sarai più fortunata is an action that translates a dynamic expressed in life through a simple movement. It is an incessant search for balance that constitutes the state of exception because, as soon as it is 'touched', it is immediately lost. It is a condition of perpetual instability, but it also translates the resistance that individuals may have.

The action will be accompanied by the sound work quattrocentocinquantanovevirgolaquattro, which returns the voice of the artist's grandmother.

 

Ritenta, sarai più fortunata (Try again, you will be luckier) will take place for the first time in front of the audience at the Vebikus Kunsthalle Schaffhausen on 10 June 2023 as part of the visual journey proposed in Kunst Kästen by Das Feministische Kapital.
